ESR position for a PhD project entitled Atmospheric acoustic propagation with uncertain weather parameters

A total of 15 PhD positions are available at 8 universities, 1 research centre and 4 industries, in the framework of the European Marie Curie European Training Network (ETN) zEPHYR. This project is focused on the development of performant wind farms by addressing simultaneously the individual performance of each turbine composing the wind farm, and the efficient harvesting of the local wind resources in on-shore and urban environments. The researchers recruited in zEPHYR will investigate emerging technologies through laboratory experiments, theoretical modelling and numerical simulations addressing the following aspects: mesoscale and microscale atmospheric boundary layer simulations, rotor aerodynamics, aeroacoustics and structural dynamics, atmospheric propagation and human factors, uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analysis and multi-physical optimization.
In that context, the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI) is offering an ESR position for a PhD project entitled
Atmospheric acoustic propagation with uncertain weather parameters
This research project aims at performing an Uncertainty Quantification analysis of the atmospheric propagation of the noise produced by on-shore wind turbines. Standard atmospheric conditions and ground topography are usually assumed to conduct noise incidence studies, despite the fact that such conditions are rarely met in practice. Two different environments are considered: on-shore rural landscape and urban, the latter being of importance to assess the potential of urban wind energy in future smart cities. The atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) simulation results provided by a companion project will be used as input. The expected outcomes of the project are noise footprints calculated in each environment, together with an auralization of the noise that should be perceived by rural and urban communities.
The PhD will be mainly based at the VKI under supervision by Prof. Christophe Schram, and several secondments are foreseen at partner institutions of the zEPHYR network: at Siemens Industry Software (Belgium), the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (Kenya) and the Wageningen University (Netherlands).
The contract can start between the 1st of November 2019 and the 1st of August 2020.

The multidisciplinary topics addressed in zEPHYR are scientifically challenging and of high technological and economical relevance, promising interesting career perspectives in academic and multi-sectorial industrial environments.
