Underwater noise pollution generated by pile driving has been an issue of serious concern due to the rapid developments in offshore wind and other offshore construction activities. The underwater noise pollution poses a threat to marine mammals and all new (to be constructed) wind farms require a thorough assessment of the environmental impact; underwater noise due to the installation of foundation piles offshore becomes an essential part of the latter. Next to that, regulatory bodies in various European countries impose limits on the maximum noise levels allowed during the construction process. To comply with such limits, noise mitigation becomes essential in many cases. To reduce the noise, many offshore companies have developed various mitigation measures. One of the solutions widely adopted is the use of the so-called underwater air-bubble curtains around the foundation pile.

The research team has developed a tool that can be used for noise predictions in the free-field (without the presence of the air-bubble curtain surrounding the installation pile); the so-called SILENCE software. SILENCE is a vibro-acoustic model which is used in underwater noise predictions for research purposes and is dedicated to noise predictions related to offshore pile installation. The basic module of the software is used for free-field noise predictions (without the presence of a bubble curtain) in a an environemnt consisting of a water column overyling a horizontally stratified elastic seabed [1,2]. The main task of the post-doc researcher will be to further develop the model to include multiple air-bubble curtains (and possibly other noise mitigation techniques) around the pile.

The candidate should:

hold a Ph.D. degree in related scientific field; structural dynamics, acoustics, offshore engineering.

have an excellent knowledge of the English language;

be eager to expand his knowledge in dynamics of structures, soil-structure, fluid-structure interaction and vibroacoustics;

be familiar with analytical or semi-analytical techniques to solve problems in structural acoustics (not a strict prerequisite for the position);

be affiliated with basic programming in any of the languages mentioned here: Fortran, Python, Matlab.
