The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the national metrology institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science.
With a starting date as soon as possible, the newly established “Infrasound” Junior Research Group that is part of Division 1, Mechanics and Acoustics, is looking for a candidate to fill the following position at PTB’s Braunschweig site for a duration of three years:
The Junior Research Group “Infrasound” was founded at PTB in 2022 as a joint initiative with TU Braunschweig. The research group investigates the generation, propagation and perception of low-frequency airborne and structure-borne sound.
Its work includes the development and application of modern and sophisticated processes for data evaluation and for propagation modelling for infrasound.
Your tasks will comprise:
Analytical and numerical modelling of low-frequency airborne sound
Developing algorithms for processing and visualizing data which have been acquired by means of a portable low-frequency acoustic measurement unit
Developing and implementing communication protocols for the measurement unit
Localizing and classifying sound sources, for example, using machine learning
Working in a laboratory and in field tests
Presenting the results at national and international congresses and publishing them in specialist journals
You have completed your university studies (Master’s or German Diplom) in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, applied computer science, applied physics or in a comparable field.
You have experience in theoretical and numerical modelling.
Experience in the fields of acoustics, dynamics and measurement techniques would be of advantage.
You have an extensive understanding of the fundamental aspects of physics and technology.
You have good programming skills (e.g. Python).
You are interested in supervising students’ theses.
You are a strong team player with excellent communication skills.
You are able to perform scientific work autonomously.
You work in an organized and well-structured manner.
You have a very good command of spoken and written English as well as basic skills in German.
You are willing to travel within Germany and abroad within the scope of your assignment.
You must be physically able to perform this work.
(You are sure-footed and have a good head for heights.)
