It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our colleague, Dr. Fülöp Augusztinovicz, Professor Emeritus, who died on October 22, 2026, at the age of 77.

Fülöp graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) in 1972. After spending his early years in industry, he joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) as a researcher in 1990. Drawing on the professional expertise and network of contacts he had developed there, he returned to Hungary in 1996 and, as an associate professor at BME, introduced numerical acoustics to Hungary.

In 1999, he took over the leadership of the Sound and Image Technology Laboratory Group. Bringing young colleagues into the team, he began applying this new methodology to projects of national significance. His contributions can be found in such landmark projects as the new National Theatre, the Palace of Arts, the Liszt Academy of Music, and Metro Line 4, to name just a few. His contributions also extended to numerous international research projects, encompassing a remarkable diversity of topics, from railway noise and computational vibroacoustics to the sound design of organ pipes.

In recognition of his scientific achievements, he was awarded the higher doctorate degree of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2013.

The education and nurturing of young people had always been at the heart of his work. Young people of all ages, from the very youngest to doctoral students, who shared an interest in science, listened to him with sparkling eyes. His extraordinary knowledge, entertaining lecturing style, and warm, approachable manner captivated everyone.

His popularity and professional expertise were amply demonstrated by his election as Chairman of the Standing Committee on Acoustics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2017.

We have lost an outstanding professional and a truly remarkable person, but we will cherish his memory in our hearts forever.
